If you have darker skin, you may have been told laser isn't suitable for your skin type — or been treated somewhere that left a burn, or dark marks that took months to fade. That was never your skin's fault. It was the wrong laser, or the wrong training behind it. Both matter, and both are explained below — plainly, and without exaggeration.

Why skin tone changes everything

The science, plainly — because understanding it is how you choose the right clinic.

What melanin does to laser light
Laser works because pigment absorbs light energy. Darker skin carries more melanin in the skin itself — not just the hair — so the wrong wavelength heats the surface of the skin as well as the follicle it's aiming for.
The real risks of the wrong system
On deeper skin tones, unsuitable lasers and IPL can cause burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark marks that can outlast the treatment itself. This is the complication darker-skinned clients rightly worry about, and it is avoidable with the right wavelength and settings.
The Fitzpatrick scale
Clinicians classify skin from type I (palest, burns easily) to type VI (deepest). South Asian skin typically sits at types III–V; Black and African-Caribbean skin at V–VI. Your type determines which wavelength is safe and effective — it's the first thing we assess at consultation.
Why some clinics say no
Many salons run single-wavelength systems that are only suitable for lighter skin, or IPL, which is generally unsuitable for the deepest tones. Being turned away usually says something about the equipment — not about your skin.
Our answer

Two wavelengths. One system. Every skin tone.

Peonella treats on the Candela GentleMax Pro PLUS — hospital-grade, FDA-cleared technology we chose deliberately: one system specified for every skin tone, so that no client has to be turned away.

It carries two lasers in one platform: the 755nm Alexandrite for lighter skin tones, and the 1064nm Nd:YAG — the wavelength clinicians worldwide trust for deeper skin, types IV to VI. The right wavelength for your skin is selected at your consultation and proven on your skin with a patch test before any treatment begins.

We treat deeper skin tones on deliberately conservative settings. Occasionally that means a session or two more across a course — we'd rather tell you that honestly than promise what faster settings risk.

The technology is half of it. Every Peonella laser practitioner is Candela-certified and trained in treating deeper skin tones, working to protocols designed by our senior practitioner.

One question to ask any clinic

Whoever you're considering — including us — ask what laser they'll use on your skin. For deeper skin tones the answer should be Nd:YAG 1064nm, delivered by someone trained on it. If a clinic can't answer, keep looking. We'll happily answer at your consultation, with the equipment in front of you.

Facial hair, hormones and PCOS

Dark, coarse facial hair — upper lip, chin, sideburns, jawline — is one of the most common reasons clients come to us, and one of the things laser treats best. Because the hair is dark, it absorbs the laser's energy efficiently; treated correctly, results are visible from the first sessions.

Hormonal growth, including PCOS-related hair, responds well to laser too. It's a condition we understand and treat regularly — managed with realistic expectations, since hormonal growth can need occasional maintenance. Your consultation covers this honestly.

Preparing for a wedding or an occasion? Courses run over several months, so it's worth starting early — we'll plan your sessions around your date.

Ingrown hairs and razor bumps

Curly and coiled hair often grows back into the skin after shaving, causing painful bumps, irritation and dark marks — the condition clinicians call pseudofolliculitis barbae. It affects the beard and neck in men and the bikini line and underarms in women, and it's especially common on darker skin.

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective treatments there is for ingrown hairs: fewer hairs means fewer hairs to grow back in. And because the dark dots of “strawberry skin” are often the hairs themselves sitting in the follicle, removing the hair can visibly improve that too. Men are very welcome at Peonella — beard-line and neck treatments are routine here, in private treatment rooms.

What to expect

Patch test, always
Every course begins with a free consultation and a patch test on your skin, at the settings we'd treat you with. You see exactly how your skin responds before committing to anything.
What a session feels like
Most clients describe the sensation as a brief flick of warmth, softened by a constant stream of ice-cold air on the skin throughout. Treatments are quick — smaller areas are usually completed within ten minutes — and you can return to your day immediately.
Honest settings, honest timelines
Deeper skin tones are treated on conservative settings as policy. Most clients see visible reduction within the first sessions; occasionally a course needs a session or two more than on lighter skin, and we'll tell you that upfront.
Sun and aftercare
Treated skin should be kept out of strong sun and protected with SPF around each session — particularly important for deeper skin tones, where sun exposure raises the risk of dark marks. Your practitioner will advise on timings for your skin.

What our clients say

Common questions

Is laser safe for Black skin?
Yes — on the right system. The 1064nm Nd:YAG we carry is the clinical standard for types V and VI, and every course starts with a patch test so you see how your skin responds first.
Does it work on Asian skin?
Very well. South Asian skin combined with dark, coarse hair responds strongly to laser — the dark hair absorbs energy efficiently while the correct wavelength protects the skin around it.
Will it cause dark marks?
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a risk of the wrong wavelength or aggressive settings — which is exactly why we select the wavelength for your skin type, treat conservatively, and patch test first. Sun protection between sessions matters too.
I was turned away elsewhere — why?
Usually equipment. Many salons run single-wavelength systems or IPL that aren't suitable for deeper skin tones. That's a limitation of their equipment, not of your skin.
Will I need more sessions?
Sometimes. Conservative settings on deeper tones occasionally mean a session or two more across a course. We'd rather quote you honestly than promise a number faster settings would risk your skin to hit.
Can I have laser with PCOS?
Yes — laser is one of the most effective options for PCOS-related hair. Because the underlying cause is hormonal, occasional maintenance sessions may be needed; we'll set that expectation clearly at consultation.
Does laser hurt more on darker skin?
No — on the correct wavelength, the sensation is the same brief warm flick, softened by cooling with every pulse. Discomfort on darker skin points to the wrong equipment or settings — not to laser treatment itself.
