How it works

CryoPen is a handheld cryotherapy device. It delivers a fine jet of nitrous oxide at minus 89 degrees through a 1 to 3 mm applicator, so the freeze reaches the lesion and very little else. Water in the cells of the lesion freezes and the tissue breaks down; over the following one to three weeks the lesion dries, darkens and lifts away, and the skin underneath heals flat.

That precision is the difference from the broad freeze sprays sold in pharmacies, which reach around minus 50 degrees through a wide foam tip. They often treat the healthy skin around the lesion as much as the lesion itself, which is why so many warts and skin tags come back.

Each freeze takes between 5 and 30 seconds depending on the type and thickness of the lesion. There are no needles, no anaesthetic and no stitches.

What it treats

Skin tags
Soft harmless growths on the neck, underarms, eyelids, under the bust and groin. One freeze is usually enough.
Warts & verrucas
Thicker viral lesions on the hands, feet and body. A longer freeze; sometimes a second visit after four weeks.
Milia
Small hard white bumps around the eyes and cheeks that exfoliation never shifts. Released in a single treatment.
Age spots
Flat, defined brown spots (solar lentigines) on the face, hands and chest. The pigment lifts away with the surface skin.
Cherry angiomas
Small bright red spots on the body. Treated with a short freeze.
Seborrhoeic keratoses
Raised, waxy brown patches that appear with age. Assessed first; a GP letter or our private referral check is needed if there is any doubt about the diagnosis.

For pigmentation spread across a whole area rather than a few defined spots, our Candela laser pigmentation treatments or the DMK Even Tone programme are the better route, and we will say so at the appointment.

Moles, and what we will not treat

We do not diagnose skin lesions. CryoPen is a removal tool for lesions that are already known to be harmless. Anything that is changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding, itching, has an irregular edge or that you are simply unsure about must be checked by your GP before we treat it.

Moles are not removed on sight. Bring a letter from your GP or a dermatologist confirming the mole is benign, or ask us to refer you to an offsite private medical service that examines the mole and confirms whether it is suitable for removal. That check is from £150 depending on how many moles are examined, charged whether or not the mole can then be treated, and it is separate from the removal price. If you have a mole you want looked at, book a free consultation rather than a treatment and we will take you through the referral. If a practitioner has any doubt about any lesion at your appointment, we will not treat it. That is not caution for its own sake; freezing a lesion that needed a biopsy destroys the evidence a doctor would need.

What to expect

Before
No preparation. Come with the area clean, no make-up or fake tan on it. If you are on blood thinners, pregnant or have a condition that affects healing, tell us when you book.
During
A short skin assessment, then the freeze: a sharp cold sting for a few seconds per lesion, like a nettle sting, then a mild ache that settles within minutes. 15 to 20 minutes door to door.
The first 24 hours
The area reddens and may blister or swell within a few hours. Keep it dry, leave any blister intact and do not pick.
Days 2 to 21
A small scab forms and lifts away on its own in one to three weeks, taking the lesion with it. Normal washing is fine after 24 hours. Use SPF on the area once healed to protect the new skin.
Results
Most skin tags, milia and age spots clear with one treatment. Warts, verrucas and thicker lesions sometimes need a second freeze; a repeat treatment of the same lesion is charged at 50% of the original price.
Marks
Occasionally a small lighter or darker patch where the lesion was, which usually fades over a few months. Darker skin tones are treated with shorter freeze times to limit this.

Priced by the number and size of lesions, not by session. Consultation and assessment are included and you are treated in the same visit, paid on the day. Small lesions are skin tags, milia, age spots and cherry angiomas; warts, verrucas and anything medium or large are priced individually at the assessment. More than ten lesions, or anything you want to talk through first: the consultation is free.
